Even if you have it set to flash continuously, it won't do any good if the flashing stops when Pidgin gets a notice that the user on the other end is typing or closed the window, or is no longer paying attention, etc.
I think the problem for many people isn't that it flashes three times and stays highlighted, I think the problem is that there's no visual indication that you received a new message if the person on the other end closes their IM window.
Ok, so here's the deal. It only kicks in when something tries to bring a window to the foreground when you've had some sort of other user input within a certain amount of time. I recognize that the fact that it mysteriously stops flashing and doesn't stay highlighted is a separate problem. This means that every time we recieve a typing notification event for the current tab, we lose notification that we have unread messages.
Fortunately, we can avoid this by checking if we actually need to change the title. Fixes yay! References , , The only thing I'd be worried about here is if you don't have "Prevent apps from stealing focus" checked, will Pidgin start stealing focus? If default behavior is unchecked, do we want this? It won't. We're not requesting focus, just reusing the count of times to flash the taskbar set there.
