To bad it never got updated. Solid product! Won a copy of Beersmith, but this old engineer is of the of it ain't broke mentality. Heck even moving from beersmith 1 to beersmith 2 was frustrating for me at first. Glad I did though, as beersmith 2 is much better once you get to know the ins and outs of it. But once a software program is no longer supported or updated I would like to think I'd force myself to leap to another one.
I'd hate to have to keep adding ingredients every year and or jumping through other hoops to try and keep the program somewhat relevant. Thing is, the math doesn't change, so the formulas should be the same as well. Unless there's some breakthrough in brewing science from out of the blue, that will always be the case.
I tried BeerSmith, and while I'm certain it is a fine program that does what it is intended to do, it felt completely and totally "off" to me. Nothing made sense in the layout. I understand that's because I know my way around ProMash, but then that's exactly why I want to keep it. I don't mind adding grains or hops to the ProMash database, either. That's one of the things that drew me to the program way back when, it's easy expandability. Another fan of the program shared his ingredient databases a couple years ago to help people catch up, and adding things yourself couldn't be easier.
IIRC The numbers didn't change for Just some of the wording and reference beers. So the update should work OK. I'm glad that you like Beer Smith but that really isn't helpful. Posted 06 April - PM. It is the premise of this book A Handbook of Basic Brewing Calculations that imprecise control is better than no control, and if the brewer does not have the time or resources to perform pilot batches or laboratory methods to measure and confirm color standards, then some method of prediction is helpful, even if there are shortcomings.

Like Stephen Holle writes, Of course he's talking about color predictions, which it seems most pro-brewers may not even do, but I believe the point-of-view applies to FG as well. It may be imprecise, but at least it ballparks you.
I know it's not telling me my exact FG, but it usually gives me some idea of where I will be. I like how strangebrew does it you input the percentage and it will calculate. I have pretty good idea based upon grain bill and mash temp how much attenuation I should expect. What a pain albeit slight and reallly not necessary. Some things that did change from the default guide in Promash wer a drop in the OG on several of the bigger styles, and the high end SRM on all the stouts was capped at Posted 08 April - PM.
But if the user isn't aware that the FG prediction is nothing more than a wild-ass guess, he might be led to believe that there is some accuracy to the prediction. Many users of brewing software packages still believe that they can calculate IBUs. FG should be an input to the brewing process, not an output.
